What Causes Dog Fungal Skin Infections?

This relatively hard to diagnose fungal condition is in most cases a fungal skin infection called ringworm. Ringworm can be caused by two different fungi called micosporum and trichophyton and it can be spread to any other animal or human via direct contact making this a very serious problem for the pet in question and others in the household. It is commonly thought to be a worm curled up under the skin in the hair follicles but is in fact a fungal infection under the skin and as it begins to spreads outwards it makes a circular shape often destroying the hair at the skin line causing it to fall out.

What Your Vet May Say or Do

After inspection of the dog and a fungal infection is confirmed to be present the vet may advise daily tablets, shampoo or other medicines to combat the infection at the base of the hair follicles and stop any progression and clear all traces. Treatment may be decided by how far gone the fungi is, if there is more than one person/pet affected, or if children are present in the household. If the treatment above fails to work then the vet may choose to shave the dog’s hair to combat the situation but this will be last resort and the condition is often solved well before this point.
