Dog Food Allergies Symptoms 1. Dog itchy all over their bodies. 2. Possible improvements when the diet of the dog is changed slightly.
What Causes Dog Food Allergies?
The cause for food allergies as you may have guessed is due to a type of food or a certain ingredient in that food that triggers and allergic reaction making the dog itch all over and become uncomfortable. Despite what you might think, true dog allergies are actually very uncommon but a much more common condition of intolerance to foods is the more likely cause, this is when a dog is not used to a type of food they are given. This can be thought of as similar to when some people go on holiday to places like India where there is a difference in diet and the food is spicier causing their stomachs to become upset and uncomfortable. The most common foods to have this effect on dogs are wheat products, dairy products and beef. But in either case of true dog food allergies and food intolerance the way to stop the itching is to find the offending ingredient and remove it from their diet.
What Your Vet May Say or Do
If the dog in question is presented to the vet with this condition they will more than likely try to determine whether the dog has a food allergy or intolerance to food. This can be determined by giving the dog a type of special food or a diet they have not had before, if the itching remains then the itching is normally due to an intolerance to food because true allergies can only develop when the food has been eaten before. In either case the diagnosis from here will entail removing different types of food from the dog’s diet and observing if the itching and symptoms become better or worse, if they are worse then try removing a different type or ingredient of food, if on the other hand the problem gets better then continue on this diet until the problem is solved and itching stops.
