History The Tibetan Mastiff is originally from the Himalayan Mountains and Tibet. These dogs have a very long and rich history, dating back thousands of years. The Tibetan Mastiffs were used to guard the villages, and also to protect the flocks. Tibetan Mastiffs were first introduced to England during the mid 1800s, as one of them was sent to Queen Victoria.

Characteristics

Tibetan Mastiffs are very wilful dogs, but also very clever. They perform well in a variety of tasks, but will need good training in order to reach this point. If these dogs are correctly trained, they will do well in obedience and also as guard dogs.

Temperament

Tibetan Mastiffs are without fear, and these dogs are also very protective. They are however also very enduring and kind. Tibetan Mastiffs make wonderful family dogs, especially to those with previous dog ownership experience. The Tibetan Mastiff is a faithful, committed and very trustworthy dog. They most certainly have a mind of their own, and are also very attentive and confident. These dogs are very clever and bright, and learn quite quickly. The Tibetan Mastiffs will protect their families with all they have. The owners of these dogs should be confident and firm in their handling of them.

Care

Tibetan Mastiffs will work very well with those people with little time to dedicate to grooming their dogs, as these dogs are very low maintenance dogs. Their coats can be kept in a good condition by brushing them once a week, but this will have to be increased during times when they shed a bit more. Some of the Tibetan Mastiffs have thicker coats which will mat from time to time, and more attention should then be paid to grooming these dogs. Tibetan Mastiffs are medium shedding dogs, and will therefore not work well with allergy sufferers. For more detailed info, take a look at the Tibetan Mastiff Grooming page.

Training

These dogs will require dominant and strong handlers when it comes to training, seeing that they are very willful. Without the correct training, Tibetan Mastiffs can become very destructive if not stimulated enough. It is very important to be consistent in training these dogs; otherwise success will not be obtained. In a positive training environment, the Tibetan Mastiff will do very well.
