Introduction

Siberian Huskies were developed by the nomadic Inuit people of Eastern Siberia. These dogs were mainly developed to pull sleds over long distances. Siberian Huskies were ideal dogs for the cruel Siberian winters, and the rough terrains. During the beginning of the 20th century, the Siberian Huskies was brought to North America where these dogs did very well at competitive dog sled racing. These dogs won most of the stamina racing titles which started in Alaska in 1909. The rocky terrains in Alaskan terrain were ideal for the lighter Siberian Huskies. Siberian Huskies became even more popular after several teams of sled dogs were used to deliver antitoxins to Nome in Alaska, to fight a diphtheria epidemic.

Characteristics

The Siberian husky is a very solid and powerful working dog. These dogs can endure temperatures of 75 degrees below zero, and are therefore best suited for cooler to cold climates. Siberian Huskies display a lot of distinction and shyness, but these dogs are sociable companions and very eager working dogs.

Temperament

Being very kind and sweet natured, Siberian Huskies are dogs that will fit in well with the family. These dogs are very reliable, loving and very affectionate. They love attention from their families. Siberian Huskies can become very destructive if they are left alone for too long. These dogs require lots of exercise, and will not work well with someone that doesn’t have time to devote to their pets. These dogs are very fast and supple – and make wonderful hiking and jogging companions. Siberian Huskies also need a safe and secure area to play in, as they are known for escaping.

Care

The Siberian Huskies needs a reasonable amount of grooming, and their coats will require brushing twice during the week. During periods of heavier shedding, the brushing will have to be increased. The Siberian husky is a heavy shedding dog, and will not be well matched to those people having allergy problems. For more detailed info, take a look at the Siberian Husky Grooming page.

Training

The Siberian husky is very bright, and also stubborn. These dogs will only obey commands if they agree with it. Siberian huskies will react best to training if it is conducted in a patient and fair manner. They will also try to dominate if the owner does not let them know who their boss is. Siberian huskies are also fairly difficult to housebreak, and therefore the crate training method is recommended.
