History Sealyham terriers are originally from the area of Pembrokeshire in Wales. These dogs were developed here during the 19th century by captain Edwardes. These dogs were a favourite with many celebrities worldwide, especially during the 1920s and the 1930s. Sealyham terriers were originally bred to hunt otters, badgers and foxes.
Characteristics
Sealyham Terriers are resilient and well-built little dogs. They are very confident and delightful dogs. Sealyham Terriers are very lively dogs, brave and energetic, and also portrays a very healthy nature. Sealyham Terriers are very cheerful companions, and in general are very devoted to their families and owners.
Temperament
Being strong-minded, attentive and wilful – Sealyham Terriers are very independent and easy dog. These dogs can however be very strong headed and obstinate, which can make training very challenging. Sealyham Terriers are better suited to people with some previous experience in dog ownership. Sealyham Terriers requires early socialisation in order to promote a good nature. These little dogs are very fond of digging, and can also bark very loudly. These terriers also will not react positively when they are treated in roughly, and is therefore not suited to families with small children.
Care
Grooming requirements for Sealyham Terriers can be quite high, and you will need to brush their coats about three times during the week to keep it in a good condition. Their beards should also be checked and cleaned in order to promote good hygiene. Their coats might also require clipping ever so often. If these dogs are properly groomed, they are fairly low shedding dogs – and therefore suited well to those suffering from allergies. Training
Sealyham Terriers can be very difficult to train. They learn very quickly, but may be very dominant. Early socialisation and obedience training is very important for these dogs. These little dogs will respond best if their training is conducted in a firm, but fair way – and also with enough consistency. These dogs also enjoy lots of exercise, and love earth dog activities.
