History The Sayomed is originally from Russia where they were used for herding and guarding – and even to help keep the huts of the tribe members warm. Sayomeds are also often used for sled pulling purposes in the Arctic region. These dogs have also become very popular family dogs. The name of these dogs is derived from the nomadic Siberian people, called the Samoyed.
Characteristics
The Samoyeds are very peaceful dogs, and they are very lively. Although these dogs usually favors their masters, the will be fairly friendly toward most people. The Samoyed is a very sociable dog. Apart from the fact that they are very beautiful, they are also very wonderful companions.
Temperament
Samoyeds are very friendly and good natured dogs. They are good family pets seeing that they are so loving and affectionate. These dogs are very fond of playing, and can also be naughty at times. The Samoyed is very sweet and gentle, and will get along well with most people. Sayomeds will bark if something is amiss, but they are kind to be a guard dog. This breed loves to spend time with their families, and will therefore not work for people that don’t have enough time to devote to their pets. Seeing that these dogs love to chase, they will need a secured area to be in when they are not on a leash.
Care
Samoyeds shed their coats twice during the year, and can shed very large amounts of fur during these times. A double toothed comb is recommended to remove any loose hair when they are shedding. The rest of the year, the Sayomeds are very reasonable shedders. The coats of these dogs should not be brushed too forcefully, otherwise they might be damaged. The white coats shed dirt fairly easily. The Samoyed will require being bathed occasionally. For more detailed info, take a look at the Samoyed Grooming page.
Training
Sayomeds are very wilful and obstinate when they are trained up in obedience. It is important that their training is conducted in a firm and consistent way. Their training should also be very patient when it comes to training. A mixture of training methods is required seeing that the Samoyeds have a very low attention span.
