History The Saint Bernard has a very interesting and extended history. These dogs are originally from Switzerland where they were developed by monks. The Saint Bernard became famous for helping travellers that were lost, and also by keeping them warm when they were cut off in the cold. The Saint Bernard originally had short hair, but after they were crossed with the Newfoundland, they long haired breed was developed.

Characteristics

The Saint Bernard is e very devoted and warm dog. They are very powerfully build, but never unpleasant. These dogs are very loyal, very clever and also highly intelligent and modest. The Saint Bernard is very striking because of its size, but displays it in a very kind manor.

Temperament

The Saint Bernard is a very bright and clever dog, and possesses lots of courageous and loyalty. These dogs are also very obedient, and have a very good nature about them. Some Saint Bernards are extroverts, and some of them are introverts – but it is important that they have close relationships with their families. These dogs should not be left outside all the time, as they need to be a part of the families’ activities. These dogs also do very well with children, but because of their big size, they should always be supervised when with children or smaller animals. The Saint Bernard is a very slow mover, and also very obedient – and they will do everything to please their owners. The Saint Bernard is very easy to train.

Care

This breed is a very heavy shedding breed, and will shed its coat twice during the year. Both the types of coat are easy to maintain, and will have to be brushed often. The Saint Bernard likes a bath and brushed, but should be trained in this from puppy hood. It is important though to not bath these dogs too often, and when bathing them, to only use a mild soap to avoid removing the natural oils from there coats. Training

The Saint Bernard should be socialised from a young age onwards to make it easier later on. These dogs have a very strong desire to please their owners, and will respond very positively to gentle but firm and consistent training. The Saint Bernard does very well with basic exercises such as heeling, sitting, and staying.
