History
Labrador Retrievers have their origin in Newfoundland during the 1700s. These dogs were developed to help the fishermen tow in their fishing nets. The Labrador retriever was then imported to England during the 19th century. The fact that these dogs are so adaptable, and various other characteristics, has made them extremely popular family pets. Labrador Retrievers have excellent noses which they use for tracking purposes, and their mouths are also very soft – this enables them to retrieve game without doing any damage to it. These dogs have done very well in competitions, as well as being guide dogs for the blind. They have also been effectively used as narcotics and bomb detection dogs.
Characteristics
The Labrador retriever is a medium sized dog. They are built athletically, and they are also very even balanced. These dogs are very friendly and warm. They also have very sweet, outgoing personalities. There are two types of Labrador, and they differ slightly. The American Labrador is tall and long-limbed – and the English Labrador which is more broad and heavy. This breed is very skilled in hunting and retrieving activities. Labrador Retrievers are regarded very highly as companions to their owners. They are also extremely highly respected for the loving natures they possess.
Temperament
Labrador Retrievers are very good natured dogs. This is an extremely loving dog, and they are also very loyal toward their families. Labrador retrievers are very intelligent dogs. They are also very sensitive, and can be very obedient. This makes it possible for them to train very easily. Labrador Retrievers will be suited for both experienced and inexperienced dog owners. They are extremely quickly to learn, and they are also very warm and social dogs. Care
These dogs have relatively low grooming needs. It is advised that their coats are brushed on a weekly basis in order to keep it shiny, and in a good condition. Training
Labrador Retrievers train very easy. It is recommended that they receive socialization and obedience training when still young. This breed is also very strong, and must be trained to not pull on their leash. They will not respond positively if they are treated rough or heavy-handedly. Labrador Retrievers requires consistency and firmness as a part of their training regimes. It must also include respect and reward where necessary. It is well known that these dogs perform very well in activities such as police work, tracking and search and rescue. They also make wonderful guides for the blind, and they also work as service dogs for people that have disabilities.
