History Giant Schnauzers are believed to have come from crosses between dogs like the Great Dane, the Bouvier des Flandres and the Standard Schnauzer. In the German language the word “Schnauze” has the meaning of “muzzle”. Originally, these dogs were used to herd cattle in the area of Bavaria. At a later stage, they were used by the police, and also by the military. These dogs tend to make wonderful family dogs.

Characteristics

This breed is very large and dominant, but at the same time they also possess a lot of grace. These dogs can get by in very harsh weather conditions, and they are extremely tough dogs. They are very proud, and they have a lot of determination. All the diverse attributes of these dogs makes them wonderful pets to have as a part of your family.

Temperament

It is well known that Giant Schnauzers are very clever and resourceful dogs. They are also very protective of their owners, and brave. These dogs also have a very calm nature, and they are very loyal. They love to be with their families all the time. Giant Schnauzers are very trainable, and do best if the training environment is consistent and positive – they also love to be rewarded. It is important to let them socialize with other animals and humans from an early age onwards, as some can become a bit wary of strangers.

Care

It should be known that the Giant Schnauzer requires very high maintenance when it comes to grooming them. Possible owners should therefore have enough time available to commit to these dogs. Their coats should be brushed fairly often. It is also advised that their beards be cleaned. The hair around their bottoms should also be kept short and clean for hygienic reasons. If these dogs are doing shows, their dead hair should also be stripped every few months. Although these are high maintenance dogs, they do not shed all that much. Training

Giant Schnauzers have lots of energy, and they are also very bright dogs. Therefore it is important to provide them with sufficient physical and mental stimulation. These dogs learn fairly quickly, and this is beneficial when it comes to training. This breed can be very strong-minded and dominating though. They are therefore recommended to owners with some previous dog ownership experience. Giant Schnauzers also have the tendency to try and group children, and they also tend to be quite overprotective. These dogs love to be around humans, and it is important to give provide them with enough exercise and attention.
