Bloodhound

Introduction

Bloodhounds are one of the oldest breeds of dogs to date. It is unknown from where this breed have originated from, however they where perfected by monks in Belgium. After that the breed was then brought by the Normans into England and then into the United States. Bloodhounds are hunters - however they love tracking the most. These are scent hounds, and they loose interest in whatever they are doing very quickly. This breed is commonly used as both a companion and tracker - they track down game, criminals and even lost children.

Characteristics

The Bloodhound is a timid and easy-going dog – but they can be sociable if they are given enough time to warm up. They can be very wary of strangers, but they should never show any hostile tendencies. The Bloodhound can be very susceptible to the tone of ones voice making them rather difficult to train – they are however very eager to please their masters. This breed tends to howl at the scent of something strange, however does not bark as many other hounds do.

Temperament

This breed is a very gentle giant of a dog. They have a very strong-minded nature, influential stature and plenty of love to give out. These are sensitive dogs and are very reactive. They are also very sociable dogs, and they get on well with children, particularly when they are raised with them. They are large dogs though, and this should be considered by those that have smaller children that could easily get knocked down and hurt unintentionally. These dogs do have a very curious nature and once he gets hold of a scent he will want to follow it. This in return can result them to sometimes landing in trouble or even danger.

Care

Bloodhounds are medium shedders, and they tend to shed more heavily on a seasonal basis. The grooming requirements however for these dogs are not very demanding. Brushing the coat occasionally will remove the dead hair and keep it looking in good condition. The ears must also be checked and cleaned on a regular basis to reduce the risk of ear infections.
