English Springer Spaniel

The English springer spaniel is the founder of all the English hunting spaniels. During the Renaissance, it was though to be the perfect companion for the European hunter. It first became popular in America during the 1700s. The Springer Spaniel gets its name from the methods they use to flushing game: they spring forward to drive birds out of their hiding. These dogs do very well in hunting on both land and water. They are also very fine retrievers. The English springer spaniel’s cheery, calm personality makes him a perfect family dog. Some of their talents include hunting, tracking, retrieving, watch dogging and performing tricks.

Cairn Terrier

This dog has been known since the 1500s, but was first publicly presented in 1909 and then became popular after 1930. Cairns are one of Scotland's original terriers. Today they are probably contributors to Scottish, West Highland White and Skye terrier breeds. The Cairn terrier is mainly a companion dog. They also excel at terrier trials. Some of the talents of these dogs include hunting, tracking, watch dogging, quickness, competitive obedience and performing tricks.

Norwegian Elkhound

Norwegian Elkhounds are one of the oldest breed of dogs and they are several thousands of years old. A skeleton, very similar to today's Norwegian elkhound, has been found and it dates back as far as 4000 to 5000 BC. Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies were developed by the nomadic Inuit people of Eastern Siberia. These dogs were mainly developed to pull sleds over long distances. Siberian Huskies were ideal dogs for the cruel Siberian winters, and the rough terrains. During the beginning of the 20th century, the Siberian Huskies was brought to North America where these dogs did very well at competitive dog sled racing. These dogs won most of the stamina racing titles which started in Alaska in 1909. The rocky terrains in Alaskan terrain were ideal for the lighter Siberian Huskies. Siberian Huskies became even more popular after several teams of sled dogs were used to deliver antitoxins to Nome in Alaska, to fight a diphtheria epidemic.

English Foxhound

English foxhounds were developed by the intelligent mixing of a variety of hounds. They were also then cautiously bred with the Greyhound, the Bulldog, and the Fox Terrier. From these latter breeds the Foxhound in that order inherited its unexpected spurts of speed during the hunt, as well as its power and influence, and its enthusiasm for the hunt. The Foxhound has impressive staying power and a good nose. They can run progressively for hours at a time. Some of their talents include hunting, tracking, watch dogging and agility.

Mastiff

It is said that the Old English Mastiff may have been introduced into Britain by Phoenician traders. It is sure that they have been used as war dog by the Roman legions though. The Mastiff has been used as war dogs until the late middle Ages. After this they have been used to hunt bears and wolves. The breed’s popularity declined in England during the 19th century, but they remained fairly popular in the United States after that and were used as guard and companion dogs.
