What Causes Dog Allergies – Itchy Ears?

This condition brought on by allergies and specifically inhaled allergies (atopy) can be very annoying for the dog, and cause great discomfort. The reason for this being so uncomfortable is because when the lining of the ear becomes in flamed it closes the gap/tunnel to the inner ear leaving it vulnerable to become warm and moist. These conditions are then prefect for bacteria, fungi, and yeast infections to develop. These secondary infections are half of the problem associated with inflammation of the ear due to these allergies and cause a great deal of torment. Also if the dog’s ear remains inflamed for a long period of time then the skin becomes harder and expands as the body fights against the constant rubbing, much like when calluses form after hard work with human hands. This in turn then makes the tunnel down into the inner ear narrower and more prone to further infections in later life. For the reasons above it makes it clear that these allergies should be dealt with sooner rather than later to avoid constant attention and that when trying to diagnose the condition yourself you should always bear in mind that the infection may be happening because of previous infections that were not treated soon enough or were extensively worse.

What Your Vet May Say or Do

When the vet is being presented with this condition they will first examine to determine weather it is only an allergy which is causing the problem or if there is a secondary infection as a consequence of the initial inflammation and swelling. If this is the case and only inflammation is present then the vet may ask a series of questions to try and determine what it may be that the dog is allergic to and give them medication to solve the swelling and temporarily cure the allergy and pain as well. If on the other hand there is further infection then the vet may study the content of the ear to determine the possible causes, pus would suggest a fungal, yeast, or bacterial infection, clotted blood or black stickiness may suggest ear mites, and if a brown waxy substance and possible foul smell may suggest over production of ear wax from the body overcompensating in trying to protect the ear. All of which will be cleaned and the allergic reaction determined as stated above, with any pain also being lessened with medication.
