History The Neapolitan Mastiff is originally from Italy, and these dogs have a very long history. These dogs were almost distinct during the Second World War, but have since then become very popular again. It is believed that the Mastiff is an offspring from the ancient Roman Molossian dogs, and these dogs were used to fight in wars.
Characteristics
Neapolitan Mastiffs are very loyal and protective dogs. They will always look well after their families and their territories. These dogs are very big, and have a lot of power. It is advised to not leave these dogs alone around small children. These dogs can however be very affectionate.
Temperament
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a trustworthy and committed dog. This makes them a wonderful choice as a watchdog. These dogs will look after their families until the end. They possess lots of guts and willpower. The Neapolitan Mastiff loves to give their owners and families’ lots of love and attention. It is important to give enough attention to these dogs, and will therefore not be suited to someone that does not have enough time to commit to their pets.
Care
The Neapolitan Mastiff does not require a lot of maintenance when it comes to grooming them. They do however drool a lot, and this might require some work. Their coats should be brushed on a regular basis in order to keep it looking good. This is a breed that does not shed a lot, and will therefore work well with someone that suffers from allergies. Training
It is important to train these dogs from puppy hood onward to avoid them becoming dominant at a later stage. Their trainer should have a solid and consistent stance. These dogs can become very jealous, and it is important that training should be conducted in a firm manner.
