History
Boxers originated in Germany the late 1900s. This breed’s name was copied from the “boxing” motion they made with their front paws. Boxers are sturdy and medium sized dogs, with strong jaws and a powerful bite. They are widely used in search and rescue operations, in police work, and military work.
Characteristics
Boxers are energetic, muscular and extremely loyal dogs. They tend to have very high energy levels. They conduct themselves with pride, but they are never arrogant. They have a confident stance about them, and they are also very intelligent, affectionate and pleasant companions.
Temperament
These dogs are very good natured. They posses a lot of affection, loyalty and love that they want to share with their families. This is a dog that is sociable and humorous – and they just crave attention. They also have a lot of attention to give though. If you are looking for a dog with lots of energy, and a real people lover – the Boxer is definitely the right choice. Their energy levels actually start to calm as they grow older. This does not affect their playful and loving nature though. Boxers are also very dignified and steady. Some of them can be stubborn and even lively in the way that they act. Their protective nature and love for their family makes them successful watchdogs.
Care
The grooming requirements for a Boxer are relative low. They have shiny, firm fitting coats that only require minimal attention. Occasional brushing of their coats will keep it smooth and free of dead hair. You may need to increase the brushing during seasonal heavier shedding. Their nails should also be checked during grooming sessions. For more detailed info, take a look at the Boxer Dog Grooming page.
Training
The Boxer breed is known to get along well with children seeing that they love to play with children. It is important to bear in mind the size of these dogs if considering a Boxer in a household with very small children. If they are properly socialised, the Boxer should get along well with other pets. Some boxers are friendly and welcoming with strangers and others may be simply polite or even distant and wary of strangers. These dogs are very intelligent and headstrong.
