History The origin of the Glen of Imaal Terrier is not known. This breed is still relatively scarce in the United States. They have been named after the Glen of Imaal, Ireland. The first time that the Glen of Imaal Terrier was presented, was at a dog show in Ireland in the year of 1933. These dogs were bred to hunt animals like badgers and foxes. Today these terriers are mostly used as companion dogs, but they can still hunt pests should they have to.
Characteristics
The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a tough little dog. They are very fond of their families. These dogs are strong hunters that are very lively. They are also very bright and clever, but they can be stubborn. Glen of Imaal Terriers is very loyal toward their families and hard working dogs in general. They have a very tough attitude when it comes to hunting their preys, and some say the only way they will let go is if their jaws are forced open.
Temperament
The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a very feisty and arrogant dog. They are really tough and eager when it comes to hunting. Otherwise they are fairly calm indoors. These dogs possess a lot of intelligence. They are known for their bravery and the fact that they can be quite obstinate. They are also very loyal and gentle toward their families. They love to be close to their people, and keep them company. These dogs are wonderful with children, and also very fond of playing. Care
Glen of Imaal Terriers is not very high maintenance regarding their grooming needs. Their coats have to be brushed about twice during the week. It is advised that their beards should also be cleaned in order to promote good hygiene. It is also a good idea to check their ears regularly in order to reduce the risk of infections. Training
It is well known that these dogs are very loving and loyal toward their owners, but they are also not overly demanding. They will definitely sound the alarm if something is wrong, and this in return makes them very effective watchdogs. These dogs do relatively well around strangers, but they can sometimes be reserved. Glen of Imaal Terriers can be quite curious, and it is important to not let them loose if they are not in a secured area.
